The Young Fathers Initiative aim to:

1. Remove barriers that currently stop young father’s involvement in family life;

2. To ensure that young fathers are informed and have the skills required to father their children well;

3. To support children’s development, by supporting the active involvement of young fathers;

4. Provide professionals with information, advice and support to develop their work with young fathers.

At this stage we plan to concentrate on the following areas:

1. The introduction of a school based programme ‘preparation for fatherhood’ targeted at year 10 young men as part of their PHSE and citizenship programme.Reason:

2. Targeted support for young fathers in employment / training (but no guarantee of a job).Reason:

3. Changes in the benefit system to support young families, but not young parenthood.

4. Changes and developments in housing, to enable young families to live together or raise their children together (even if they live apart).

5. Increased inclusion of young fathers (especially in pre and post natal care).

6. The provision of mediation services at all stages (including conception, pre and post natal).

7. Clearer information about Child Support Agency and responsibility.
